Google Spreadsheets: More Muscle

Google Spreadsheets users have more reasons to smile, as the potential Excel-killer web app has had an update recently. It’s pretty minor, but perhaps a step towards becoming a web app package with full-fledged (or almost, at least) spreadsheet functionality.

Just wait ’til they get pivot tables, transpose, or matrix functionalities working. That’ll make Microsoft shudder.

There are now context menus that provide easier access to some basic functionality. You can right click in a cell to perform actions like cut/copy/paste or you can right click on a row to perform actions like inserting and deleting.

Cell formatting has been improved in this release as well. You can manage borders using the new toolbar item, and you can also use the copy/paste function to change only the formatting of a cell if you don’t want to lose data.

I hope Writely is, indeed, next in line for upgrades. It’s still not as integrated into Google as the other web apps are. However, these days my preferred online word processor-cum-collaboration site is Writeboard, for the sheer simplicity.
