Hackers Wanted a documentary
During my daily browsing I suddenly came upon the news that Ex-hacker Adrian Lamo was Institutionalized for Asperger’s disorder. Apparently Asperger’s is sometimes called the geek syndrome, which rings a bell. I’m currently reading the Millennium Trilogy and the heroin in the books is a brilliant hacker with social issues, Asperger’s disorder is suspected.
Incidentally I also came across a documentary about hackers “Hackers Wanted” which also features Adrian Lomo. Produced in 2007 and originally titled “Can you hack it?”, it was never released until today. May 20 2010, when it was leaked on the web. This documentary is for some reason not listed anymore on IMDB but you can see the page through the web archive.
I find it a huge coincidence that on the same day that the documentary is leaked online there also appears an article about Lomo being institutionalized last month. One wonders why that last one wasn’t reported sooner.
In any case the movie is now available out there in the wild, the plot line is:
This film explores the origin of true hackers vs. today’s computer criminals by following the adventures of Adrian Lamo and other well-intentioned hackers, who found security holes and pointed them out so they might be fixed, only to eventually be arrested.
It looks like an interesting documentary, I remember once seeing a documentary about hackers on The Discovery Channel, but I can’t remember the title. As a geek I have always been fascinated by hacker movies and documentaries. I never get tired of seeing “The Net”, “Hackers” is also a favorite. And even less solid movies like “Antitrust”. Being a book reader also I like books revolving around computers, internet, etc.
Now that this movies has been leaked I wonder if they will release it on DVD or just accept the leak, it is a documentary about hackers after all. It would be ironic if they made a big fuss about the leak.
