Halo 4 Introduces the Forerunners

The Forerunners are the ancient, highly advanced species that created the Halos. For the first time, players are about to come face-to-face with them, in Halo 4.

I’m not so hardcore a Halo fan that I’m snobby about new games being made for the franchise without Bungie’s involvement. I’m really impressed at the thought and development 343 Industries has put into the making of this new trilogy that starts with Halo 4. You can see every bit of it on display in this behind-the-scenes video.

Fans have been begging to find out more about the mysterious Forerunners since the very first game. Who were they? Why did they build the Halos and their horrifying Flood payload? Where did they go? They existed only in the background of the first Halo trilogy; we never saw the Forerunners themselves, only the technology they created. In Halo 4, this powerful, ancient race come to the forefront — and it sounds like they aren’t too happy, for reasons unknown. When Master Chief and Cortana become stranded on an unknown world, they find themselves fighting for their lives against the Forerunners, aka the Prometheans.

Knowing the fans have been waiting for the Forerunners to appear in the games for such a long time, 343 Industries has put enormous care into their design. As you’ll see in the video above, the Prometheans are nothing like the races of the Covenant, or even the Flood. They’re far more dangerous and more advanced, with the power to bend the very fabric of space to their will. Their weapons are also crazy cool. I love how they assemble from smaller pieces when you pick them up. It’s clear that 343 is filled with not just smart developers, but with gamers who genuinely love the Halo series.

By the way… Can you believe it’s been five years since Halo 3? Sure, there’s been ODST, Halo Wars, Halo: Reach, and the next-gen Halo makeover in all that time. But Master Chief’s main storyline hasn’t moved forward since 2007. It’s definitely time. With Bungie busy working on a big new mystery IP of their own (seriously: are they ever going to announce that thing?), I don’t have a problem with Microsoft putting together their own development company and throwing a multi-million dollar production budget into their work… well, why not? The results speak for themselves.

I can’t wait to get my hands on this game, how about you?

Also: bonus points to 343 for having an executive producer named Kiki Wolfkill.
