History of Nintendo's Game Censorship

Before the ESRB ratings were established, Nintendo of America took it upon itself to censor the content of its american games, since it was primarily aiming at a young audience. They removed blood from Mortal Kombat, removed any form of Cross or religious symbol, any nudity or sexual references, and even so far as to change any bars in a game to cafe’s instead.

Because of the ESRB ratings, Nintendo no longer censors games, as long as they are labeled with the appropriate ESRB rating for their content.
