Holiday Nostalgia: Getting Diablo II to work on today's computers
There’s nothing like a nostalgic trip down gaming in 800×600 with Diablo II. Every holiday season my buddies from all over come home and it’s been a tradition of sorts to hook up our notebooks to one of our friend’s WLAN and finish Diablo II: Lord of Destruction over several bags of Lay’s and Mountain Dew. We’re in our late twenties to early thirties. There’s nothing like it.
That’s a photo of our regular set up. On the Macs, we used to run Diablo using Crossover for Games by Codeweavers but today our lazy asses are dual booting on Windows 7. Truth is, we found out that despite having such rave reviews, Windows 7 seems to have problems running Diablo II Boot Camped on a Macintosh. It runs fine on a PC after some tweaking (in this case we were using a Sony VAIO CW on Windows 7). Search around the Internet and lo and behold there really is a fix to this. To run Diablo II on Windows 7 on a FULL SCREEN you need to run the Diablo II .exe file. Nothing will happen. Afterwards, run the game.exe file and then run the screen video test. After the screen flickers a couple of times, Diablo II will successfully run!
To run it on windowed mode, read this. All you need to do is add the “-w” extension to the Diablo executable.
Ah the nostalgia. i can’t help but stress how epic the experience is to play this again with 7 other friends from childhood.
