How Bill Gates Works

I’ve always wondered how Bill Gates works. I mean, being at the top of one of the most successful tech companies ever, I come to think if he ever gets tired of technology, or if he ever uses a computer at all, or what version of Windows he uses (and if his installation crashes and gets blue screens of death).

I get about 100 e-mails a day. We apply filtering to keep it to that level—e-mail comes straight to me from anyone I’ve ever corresponded with, anyone from Microsoft, Intel, HP, and all the other partner companies, and anyone I know. And I always see a write-up from my assistant of any other e-mail, from companies that aren’t on my permission list or individuals I don’t know. That way I know what people are praising us for, what they are complaining about, and what they are asking.

So Bill uses email, and he reads blogs. He also uses desktop search, though he didn’t say which particular application. He seems to mention a lot of Microsoft-built software in the article (of course!), such as Outlook, OneNote and Sharepoint, as well as a Microsoft-powered TabletPC. This makes me wonder whether the article was just one big marketing pitch.

So in the end, reading how Bill Gates spends his day at the office didn’t answer my questions, but further stirred my curiosity. Chief among my concerns are whether he uses products and services from Microsoft rivals, such as Google, for instance. And does he still use Internet Explorer 6?
