Jim Henson on How to Make Puppets

Many of us grew up watching Sesame Street and The Muppets.  Who can forget the adorable muppets with their large eyes that seem to pop out of their faces, which are made even more striking by their wide mouths? Of course, their own unique characteristics make them even more remarkable. Miss Piggy? Kermit the Frog? Rowlf the Dog? Gonzo the Great?

For sure, if you’re one of those who did grow up with a particular attachment to these characters , you have probably experienced nostalgia every now and then. In the course of my browsing the Web today, I came across an obscure but quite interesting video with Mr. Jim Henson himself. Indeed, the fact that it is obscure might even be the very reason the video has become so popular in the past couple of days.

This video was originally aired in 1969 and was part of Volume See (Iowa Public Television). Do not expect something like The Muppets Show, though. This video is so enthralling simply because it takes you back to your childhood days when you would spend hours creating your own puppets.

Jim Henson shares his “secrets” in this clip, and he uses all sorts of materials from wooden spoons to styrofoam cups to potatoes to make puppets. It makes me wonder…How would children of today react if they were to watch this short clip? Anyhow, enough of my rambling – here’s the video, courtesy of Topless Robot.
