Jurassic Park is Going 3D

Can you believe it’s been almost 20 years since Jurassic Park came to theaters? To celebrate, Universal is converting the film to 3D for a theatrical re-release. We’ve got a gallery of images from the movie that’s guaranteed to stir up your nostalgia, along with a special trailer and the killer movie poster.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw Jurassic Park. I was a teenager, and I’d never gone to scary movies. Just wasn’t my thing. I was fascinated by Jurassic Park because of the dinosaur special effects, because it was based on a novel by Michael Crichton (I’d read everything he’d written, and yes, the book was better), and of course because it was directed by the master of the blockbuster, Steven Spielberg.

I can still remember a TV special or interview or something I saw with Spielberg talking about the movie and the giant leap forward in computer animation that it represented, and a quote that sticks out in my mind. He was talking about the experience he wanted to create in the viewer, where they feel as though, “‘This is the first time I’m really seeing a real dinosaur.'”

And see those dinos we did. What’s most impressive to me is that for a film that was made at the dawn of CGI visual effects, those visuals still hold up. I’m sure there’s all sorts of technical reasons why Jurassic Park‘s dinosaurs can’t hold a candle to the CG creations of today, with umpteen thousand more polygons and better textures and lighting techniques and all that. But they still look remarkably good, especially the T-Rex in that unforgettable tram ride attack scene that takes place at night. Watch it in HD sometime and you’ll swear you’re looking at a living, breathing animal.

Anyway, below you’ll find the 3D re-release trailer and a gallery of images from the movie, both courtesy of Universal Pictures. Jurassic Park 3D hits theaters April 5, 2013.
