Unreal. A German fan of NASA’s now-retired Space Shuttle program launched a model LEGO shuttle into the atmosphere using a helium weather balloon. For reals.
Launched on December 31 of last year, the flight was intended as a “tribute to the end of the space shuttle era,” though it never quite reached orbit like its namesake. It did reach 35,000 meters (or almost 21 miles) above the surface of the Earth, which is pretty darn impressive.
As you can see from the video, the builder managed to capture some really spectacular footage of the shuttle’s flight using some nifty on board camera equipment. (It looks especially impressive in high-def.)
