LEGO Star Wars: The Movie

LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace

In case you didn’t know, LEGO Star Wars is a big deal. There are hundreds of building block sets, tons of collectible Minifigures, three video games, and now (drumroll please) a movie! Well, if a 30-minute animated TV special counts as a “movie.”

LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace is an all-new adventure that follows Master Yoda as he leads a group of Jedi children (yeah, I can’t say “younglings”) on a tour of the Galactic Senate. When Yoda senses a disturbance in the Force, it leads him on a journey that to save the Republic from the evil Sith. But unknown to Yoda, one of the Jedi kids stows away on his ship. (Hm. Shouldn’t Yoda be able to sense another Jedi’s presence? Just saying.) Meanwhile, C-3PO and R2-D2 are left in charge of the tour group, and we all know what that means: hijinks! Hijinks shall immediately ensue!

Hey, it’s a cartoon for kids. What do you want? Just be glad it doesn’t center on Jar-Jar.

The Padawan Menace was written by Michael Price of The Simpsons, and produced by Animal Logic, the animation studio that did Happy Feet. It’s said to feature a mishmash of characters, locations, and events from all six films, but of course done with the LEGO versions of those things.

The 30-minute special is set to premiere on Cartoon Network on Friday, July 22nd at 7:pm EST/PST. Additional screenings are planned for that Saturday and Sunday, so check your local listings.

If Animal Logic can manage to capture a fraction of the wit and charm that TT Games infuses into their LEGO Star Wars video games, then it should be good fun.
