LEGO: You Will Be Assimilated
What if Star Trek‘s Borg had created the LEGO brand? That’s where my mind goes when I look at this striking construction by LEGO builder Lukáš Šógor. (A second pic taken from a different angle is below.) He describes his piece as “Future LEGO,” but to me, it screams Borg.
Don’t know about you, but the Borg cliffhanger episode where Captain Picard was assimilated is one of those geek moments that’s etched in my mind forever. I still remember where I was when that cliffhanger, “The Best of Both Worlds,” first aired. I can still hear the dramatic rise in the episode’s music when Commander Riker gave the shocking order to destroy Picard and the Borg cube. I remember how stunned I was when the episode ended. Star Trek had never before taken a risk that felt so visceral and universe-shattering, so when this bombshell was dropped at the end of The Next Generation‘s third season, it was the moment when Next Gen transcended its small-screen format. To this day, I find it to be TNG‘s defining moment.
Which is probably why I’m so drawn to this terrific example of greebling. (Greeble is a new word I learned while writing this post. Look it up.) Most of Šógor’s work shows off super-clean architectural lines, but he appears to have indulged his dark side to prove that even for LEGO, resistance is futile.
