Everybody knows the standard bladed lightsaber, and the double-bladed saber. But there are many more custom variants from the Star Wars Expanded Universe, not to mention fan-made creations.Who knows, maybe we’ll see one or more of these in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII!
EU Lightsaber Variants
These lightsaber types have been seen in Expanded Universe storylines, including comic books, video games, and more.
Long-Handled Lightsaber
Also known as the Lightclub or the “Great Lightsaber,” these are generally wielded by Jedi or Sith who are exceptionally tall. It kind of resembles a double-bladed saber without the second blade. [Image source]
Lightsaber Pike
The Lightsaber Pike is distinguished by it’s extra-long staff and shortened laser blade. It can easily pass as a standard walking cane to an unsuspecting bystander. Until the blade is activated, that is. [Image source]
Lightsaber Nunchucks
These fibercord-linked lightsabers function similarly to the contemporary nunchucks, and are only to be wielded by those with special training. Some variations allow for linking the bottom ends of both chucks to form a double-bladed saber. It was first seen in Star Wars Battlefront II.
Tonfa Lightsabers
Also known as the Guard Shoto, these ultra-rare lightsaber variants were wielded by Maris Brood in the video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Brood was a former Padawan to Shaak Ti who turned to the Dark Side after her master’s death on Felucia. The Tonfa saber is a weapon with a shortened blade (aka, a “shoto”) and perpendicular hilt that allow for a vastly different fighting style than other lightsabers.
Lightsaber Whip
Another particularly difficult form of saber to master, the Whip is made very similarly to the standard lightsaber, but the blade is attuned to be flexible instead of rigid. [Image source]
Forked Lightsaber
This rare variation features a second, dagger-like blade emitting at a 45-degree angle from the primary lightsaber blade. I’m not sure I get the usefulness of such a weapon if it is, as depicted here, used with both blades active at the same time. [Image source]
Fan-Made Lightsaber Variants
Just for fun, these are lightsaber variants dreamed up by Star Wars fans and weapons enthusiasts.
Gauntlet Prosthetic Lightsaber
Should a Jedi or Sith lose a hand in battle (which, according to the movies, seems to happen rather often), an interesting option to offer them would be a prosthetic arm/hand that has its own built-in lightsaber. Lucas should have totally given one of these to Luke in Return of the Jedi. [Image source]
Lightsaber Knife
This shorter-bladed weapon resembles a modern-day hunting knife. [Image source]
Chakram Lightsaber
Xena, eat your heart out. [Image source]
Lightsaber Axe
No Jedi handyman should be without one. [Image source]
Katana Lightsaber
This fan made his katana saber by starting with a photo of a real katana sword (which he owns), and altering the sword in Photoshop. Turned out pretty cool, don’t you think? [Image source]
Lightsaber Claws
Okay, I don’t know if these are supposed to be claws or what, but they remind me of the Adamantium weapons sported by Marvel’s X-23 mutant. [Image source]
Gun With Lightsaber Attachment
A blaster gun with a lightsaber attached like an extra-long bayonet. Seems perfectly reasonable to me. [Image source]
Quad-Blade Lightsaber
Kind of like a double-bladed saber on steroids. A bit of overkill, and probably impractical, but interesting nonetheless. [Image source]
Hooked Lightsaber
This one would allow for some very different grips and strikes. [Image source]
Bow & Arrow Lightsaber
Completely illogical and unusable, I’m not sure what the thinking is behind this one. But it’s kinda pretty. [Image source]
