I know a lot of people aren’t looking forward to Cars 2 as much as they do other Pixar films. And for good reason: Cars is primarily a franchise aimed at little boys. That said, I think the movie looks like a blast, what with its globe-trotting spy angle and another trademark Pixar eccentric cast of characters.
Disney has released pictures of every character featured in the film, and from the other cars racing against Lightning McQueen in the first-ever World Grand Prix to a huge assortment of spy characters, it’s always fun to see how Pixar uses character design to accentuate that character’s personality. And then there are the real-life people who appear as Cars in the film, such as the Queen of England and Jeff Gordon (who appears as “Jeff Gorvette”). Even famed Pixar head honcho and Cars director John Lasseter appears (as “John Lassetire”).
Here’s a complete gallery of every character appearing in the film. (The collectors out there will find that the toys are already showing up in stores everywhere.)
I’m definitely in that camp of people who don’t understand the appeal of Cars. Why are anthropomorphic vehicles interesting? How are you supposed to identify with them?
I never watched Transformers as a kid, but can kind of understand that appeal. They at least turn into robots. And to a little kid, they seem all badass. But Cars? I just don’t get it.
It’s very simple. Little boys LOVE all thing cars. Not referring to the movie, just cars in general. They love playing with Matchbox cars, they love collecting them, driving play cars, learning about how cars work.
Put a face on a car and give it a unique personality, and put a bunch of them in a movie with lots of racing action, and bam: box office and merchandising gold.
I guess.
I suppose I don’t actually know any guys who are car nuts. All the men I know are geeky!
