Michael Dell Sinks $100M Into Red Hat

Billionaire Michael S. Dell, founder and chairman of Dell Inc., has placed a $99.5 million bet on Red Hat.

Dell invested his own money in the Raleigh Linux software developer, taking the largest single chunk of $600 million in debentures offered by the company in January 2004.

With Dell’s continuing interest in AMD’s chips along with Apple’s climb over the last couple of years it’s no surprise that you haven’t heard the phrase WinTel in a while. This is really big for Red Hat and I believe puts them heads and shoulders above Novell with regards to credibility in the corporate world.

Billy Gates definitely can not like this development. But how much, if any, does this help the open source community?
