MP3 Player Levy in Canada...Again!
So many people think that we here in Canada have it all so easy with our online media laws and whatnot, but what you don’t know is that we pay a special “tax” on all of our blank media. Basically anything that can hold music, we pay some extra money towards.
You’d think this would be okay, but it all adds up fast, and for about two years now on iPods, we have had some relief, but alas, it might not stay that way. At least that is what a recent article on Engadget alludes to, saying “[t]he CPCC is now calling for the Canadian Copyright Board to classify MP3 players as a whole under category of “audio recording media,” as well as an increase in the levy range from CAD$5 to $75 depending on the capacity of the storage.”
Would you pay an extra $75 for a top of the line iPod? I don’t know that I would want to.
