I feel so silly because I got so excited when I saw NerdApproved’s post about Tolkien’s reading of his poem Namárië in Elvish. ((NerdApproved)) I was thinking that I had never heard Elvish spoken, till it was pointed out -- in a veiled manner -- that I have watched LoTR more times than I could count. Too many times, if there is such a thing, that I have had dreams of being surrounded by orcs getting the cook pot ready. But that’s a story for another time.
Anyhow, apparently, the linguist in Tolkien demanded that the Elvish language both be written and spoken, and after listening to him reading Namárië, one can only understand why.
Isn’t that a lovely accompaniment to a Friday?
Now, I have a question. What “real” language does it sound most like? If you want further -- not to mention humorous -- reading on this topic, check out the comment thread on Reddit. No need to warn you just how much of a time sink this can be!
