Admittedly, it’s not a tough “costume” to put together, but the man playing Constantine on the new NBC series this fall is a dead ringer for the comic anti-hero. The accent, the coat, the tie, the scruff, even the hair look as if they were lifted from the Hellblazer comic itself.
I actually enjoyed the Keanu Reeves film from a few years back, but that’s because I’m not a dedicated reader of the comics. Uber-fans couldn’t stop complaining about even the littlest details about that version of John Constantine, which kind of undermined the quality of the film on its own terms.
Thankfully, this version is made for TV and seems to have gotten all the aesthetics right, if this trailer is any indication. Even the visual effects, which are a must for a show like this, look tons better than the film. And it looks SCARY! With the precedent set by AMC’s The Walking Dead and FX’s American Horror Story, it looks like NBC isn’t holding back with their entry into the horror television genre, even if the show is on a mainstream core network.
But who am I to tell you what to think? Let us know your thoughts on this new and apparently improved version of Constantine.
Constantine premieres on NBC Friday, October 24th at 10/9c on NBC.
