Oamaru in North Otago, in the South Island of New Zealand, is the largest town in the area and is a popular tourist destination mainly because of its population of little Blue Penguins. They interestingly describe these animals as “birds that act like fish”, and they’re so cute that people the world over travel great distances to see them.
But even if you don’t like penguins (shame on you!), there is another reason to add Oamaru to your travel bucket list (aside from the fact that visiting New Zealand in general is a must for Lord of the Rings fans): it’s a town that glorifies steampunk like nothing else.
The guys at BoingBoing visited Oamaru and showed proof that the town is indeed the steampunk capital of New Zealand. While steampunk capital of New Zealand may not be the first thing that comes to mind when hearing of Oamaru (let’s face it, most of us may not have heard of Oamaru before now anyway), the town really does have a district that showcases the best of steampunk you’ll find.
Of course, that got us interested in digging around for more information about this town which calls itself the steampunk capital of New Zealand.
As it turns out, Oamaru even hosts 2015 Steampunk NZ Festival, which is going to be held on May 28, 2015 for three days:
The ideal Christmas present for the discerning steampunk, tickets for the 2015 Steampunk NZ Festival in Oamaru.
Starts with a night of Victorian magic on 28th May 2015 and finishes with the Steampunk NZ Gala Ball on 31st May. With internationally acclaimed steampunk personality, Montague Jacques Fromage.
In case “Christmas present” threw you off, they celebrate this holiday during the summer down there. (So if you love Christmas that much, celebrate it twice a year by visiting New Zealand during the summer.)
The dedicated web site to steampunk is called Steampunk HQ, where you’ll learn all about the highlights and features of the attraction.
Here are some photos from the web site that will show you just how much they love steampunk in Oamaru.
For sure, steampunk lovers are already starting to drool over the Steampunk HQ.
How do you get to Oamaru?
First you have to get to New Zealand, obviously. Travel to NZ gives you information about direct flights to the country as well as cruises that make port in New Zealand. You need to go to the Christchurch airport, though as Oamaru is about 3 hours south of the city.
Once you’re there, you can explore all you want – the Steampunk HQ being priority, of course.
Here’s more Steampunk goodness to look at while you save up and plan for your trip to the steampunk capital of New Zealand.
