Sempron gets 32 more bits

AMD has now confirmed that it has added 64-bit capabilities to the budget user targeted sempron CPU. The chip will be shipped with the traditinal goodies such as Enhanced Virus Protection, HyperTransport and 3DNow!. The chips will range in power from 2600+ to 3300+ and will be priced between $74 and $140 respectively. The move by Andvanced Micro Devices brings the student and family favorite into the 64-bit world and others future proof computing for low budget consumers. As the sempron is already available for socket 754, a setup which currently offers support for the athlon64, I would expect that the 64-bit sempron will be engineered for this platform as the added performance of socket 939 won’t really outweigh the cost benfits of the lowerend socket or be particular desirable among the target audience.
