Squid Game
Squid Game is a 2021 South Korean drama series released in the west on Netflix.
The show sees 456 cash-strapped contestants compete in a deadly competition. Across seven rounds, the players compete against each other, with the last one standing earning a cash prize of around $35 million.
Along the way, if a player fails in a game, they are killed, either directly by the game, or indirectly by the game’s hosts.
The show became the most-watched series on Netflix, with over 142 million households worldwide tuning into it.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk tried to sell the script for Squid Game in 2008 as a movie, however, was unsuccessful. In 2018, Netflix picked up the script with Dong-hyuk adapting it into a nine-episode series.
Squid Game picked up nominations and awards from almost all major award ceremonies, with wins coming in the Emmy Awards, Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Super Awards.
In November 2021, Director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that a second season was in the works, with Lee Jung-jae returning to his role as Gi-hun.
