The Absurd World of Competitive Texting

Note: Texting may not be our usual topic, but this infographic is certain to bring a little absurdity to your Friday.

Do you think your speedy digits match up to the fastest kids in the world? You’d probably be disappointed if you tried to have a go at these technologically savvy young minds. Competitors around the world are winning big prizes, proving their prowess with keyboards.

While touchscreens are never allowed in texting competitions, the competitors don’t seem to mind. Here is the Guinness Book of World Records phrase used to test fast texters to establish the best of the best:

“The Razor-toothed piranhas of the genera serrasalmus and pygocentrues are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.”

Now try typing that on your phone, and see how fast you can do it. (I fail miserably, but I use a touchscreen phone so I would be disqualified anyway.)

People preparing to be tested by Guinness World Records will memorize this phrase in their native language and practice typing it for hours a day until it comes out of them effortlessly. A young woman completed the test in just 25.94 seconds, though she did use a touchscreen. In Arabic, the fastest record thus far is 43.44 seconds, which took place in 2008. Others have taken the challenge in the dark, blindfolded, and in foreign languages to make new records.

These wunderkinds can type out their homework on their phones faster than they can on their laptops in most cases. It’s no surprise then that Guinness is now adding a category for fastest sky diving texter.

Text championships are being held all over the world to test these super-fast dialers. If you want to test your own skills, download a handy app that will measure your smartphone keystroke speed. In the meantime, learn more about texting champions from around the world in this infographic.
