'The Darkness II' Is Coming
By popular demand of pretty much no one, 2k Games is releasing a sequel to The Darkness, based on the Top Cow comic book of the same name. The Darkness II will hit stores this Fall, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows. I never played the first game, did you?
Here’s the details.
The Darkness II is set two years after the first game (which released four years ago — confused yet?), and is being developed by Digital Extremes, the studio that created the disappointing Dark Sector and had a hand in the development of several bigger titles like Unreal and BioShock. In this new game, anti-hero Jackie Estacado continues to wield The Darkness, an ancient, ruthless force of chaos and destruction, while becoming the Franchetti crime family’s new Don. In the first game, Jackie used The Darkness to avenge the murder of his girlfriend, a death that still haunts him.
When Jackie is suddenly attacked without provocation, a full-scale mob war is instigated, and The Darkness itself takes the opportunity to break out of the tight lid of control that Jackie’s kept it in over the last two years. But the attempt on Jackie’s life may be the work of some outside force intent on harnessing the power of The Darkness by any means necessary.
The game touts something 2k and Digital Extremes is calling “Quad-Wielding” gameplay, which is a fancy way of describing the four Demon Arms used by Jackie Estacado in the game. These arms will allow players to slash, grab, and throw both objects and enemies, while Jackie still uses his own arms to fire two weapons.
The Darkness II is being written by comic book scribe Paul Jenkins, and the game is said to be heavily themed around “dark versus light” motifs, as well as using visuals that show off a hand-painted noir look. (The first screenshot released for the game is above.) Expect plenty of hardcore stylized violence and an M rating.
