Three new cellphones from Panasonic

Panasonic recently announced three new handsets that, overall, bring nothing new to the industry but sport very distinct lines and very large screens, without having an over-sized (or over-thickened) casing.

The most modest of the three is the Softbank 822P (pictured below). It has 8.9mm of thickness and is compatible with 3G and GSM networks. Also, it has the other minimum specifications that almost all other cellphones have nowadays: Bluetooth, 2Mp Camera, and so on.

The next two models are clamshell cellphones that have the love-or-hate metal touch-pads a-la Motorola Razr. The first of them, and my personal favorite from this lineup is the W61P (pictured below), that brings the same features that the 822P has and then some. It has 12.9mm of thickness, a 3″ screen, 100mb of internal memory ,and a 1Seg television tuner (which is completely useless outside of Japan).

The last phone, of the lineup, the P705iu , is basically a thinner version of the W61P at the expense of losing the 1Seg tuner, which makes it slightly less useless for European users, and will probably end up being sold by Vodafone in Europe. Despite losing the TV reception, this is the “fastest” mobile communication device of the lineup as it supports HSDPA. That alone makes this 9.8mm thick device faster than my crippled DSL connection.
