1) How Do You Turn This On — Age of Empires II: Age of Kings

AOK026

Aaah, yes, historical accuracy, how we love you. This, perhaps, is one of the best reasons why we’re so into the Age of Empires franchise: growing your settlement, utilizing the flow of history to advance the tech age of your own town, and trampling the opposition underfoot with dual-machine gun-wielding Shelby Cobras.

That’s really how the battle of Agincourt went down, right?

If you’ve begun to find watching your cavalry units make tedious work of the enemy buildings, we recommend you try keying in “How do you turn this thing on” the next time you play Age of Empires II: Age of Kings.  It results in one bullet-firing AC blue and white AC Cobra with an impressive range of 10 and can pummel through castles like a hot knife through butter. The more times you key in the cheat, the more cobras you get. Watch your enemy’s men get run over with gun-wielding cars. Profit!

2) Flying Purple Hippo — Age of Mythology

We sincerely think the developers had a lot of fun with the expansion Age of Mythology. And how can they not? It’s your good ol’ real-time strategy adventure, with a heady serving of might, magic, and mythology thrown in for good measure. Favor gathering methods, myth units, and game-changing god powers is what sets this unique game apart from its predecessors. and oh, yeeeeeees —  the cheat codes.

Who can ever forget the Flying Purple Hippo? It’s been referenced, cross-referenced, and parodied in a number of other games, and is one of the most iconic figures to ever casually feature in a game. all you need do is key in “wuv woo”, and voila! It’s one fast baby with a great line of sight, which makes it ideal to act as a scout or marker for god powers. Plus, it can attack animal units, which also makes it perfect to attack big baddies like Set.

And it shoots cartoon hearts at its enemies. If that’s not adorable, I don’t know what is.

3) O Canada 2005 — Age of Mythology

If the Flying Purple Hippo rules the skies, Lazer Bear is the myth unit to have on land. Why? Let the unit’s description be your guide:

From the dark reaches of Canada comes a superhero dedicated to truth, justice and liquid refreshment. Lazar bear is armed with his deadly lazar (TM) vision and a teleportation belt. He also packs a nasty punch. He is never far from his hordes of wicked monkeys. Lazar Bear has been known to occasionally make demands of the world goverments under threat of painful retribution, but most of the time he’s a pretty good guy.

Just type in “O Canada 2005”, and Lazer Bear is yours. Seriously, a super-bear that shoots lazers out of its eyes. this versus a horde of your enemy’s ground units? No contest.

4) RadioFreeZerg — Starcraft

Every now and then, we’d all want a change of tunes while build our space bases and level up our troops. After hours and hours of game play and grinding the troops to some acceptable and serviceable level, the background track can sometimes get a bit old. And besides, what could be trippier (or more hilarious) than grinding your enemies into chopped liver to Taylor Swift’s 1989?

Now if you’re wanting something a little bit more in line with the faction but also different, “RadioFreeZerg” is your best friend.

This cheat only works in single-player mode in Brood War while playing as Zerg.

What you get is an early 90’s Euro-dance track where the Overlord is your DJ, and all is well in the hive. Have a listen-in below:

To bring things up to date, let’s take a look at Starcraft2. It’s that endless fun between the Protoss, Zerg, and Terrans all over again, with a good serving of crucial decision-making branches, killer graphics, and an overall awesome nostalgia trip for players who grew up with the franchise.

Seeming to take a nod from the aforementioned “RadioFreeZerg” cheat, the good people at Blizzard deemed it fit to include a single written by none other than Lvl 800 Elite Tauren Chieftain, a rock band composed of Blizzard’s employees. The song itself is played as the end credits roll, and is an unlockable option in the cantina. You can also access the song finding the level secret in the mission “Zero Hour”, as well as unlocking via the cheat code “overengineeredcodpiece”.

What do you get? One badass rock anthem “Terran Up the Night” to go, with a cheeky reference to its fantasy-based twin:
