5 Underrated Movies Perfect for Popcorn Viewing on Independence Day Weekend

Tomorrow is Independence Day in the US, and we all know that means a long weekend! While some of you may already have plans, there is always the chance that you will want to stay at home and do nothing – nothing meaning binge-watching, eating, and binge-watching again.

That’s where we come in. You’ve probably gone through so many lists suggesting movies to watch on Independence Day weekend. The usual suspects – Independence Day, Saving Private Ryan, etc. – will always come up, but we’ve decided to go a different route this year. Because we’re weird like that.

How about loading up on popcorn – with lots of salt and butter – and watching these underrated movies instead?

Tim Burton’s Batman (1989)

While this Batman movie received critical acclaim when it came out, it’s not everyone’s first choice when it comes to the franchise these days. But, while Tim Burton’s Batman may not be everyone’s favorite Batman movie, it certainly deserves to be watched and re-watched. Jack Nicholson’s Joker alone is enough reason to watch this movie. Michael Keaton’s voice is definitely easier on the ears than Christian Bale’s.

The Punisher (2004)

Thomas Jane stars in The Punisher, playing the role of an FBI agent who takes a left turn and becomes a vigilante assassin instead.

His motive? What it usually is with this type of movie: vengeance for his family, who was killed by a corrupt businessman.

The plot may seem ordinary, the title may sound like an 80s film full of hammy actors, and the movie may have low ratings, but it certainly will have you grabbing fistfuls of buttery popcorn all throughout. Oh, and John Travolta also stars in the movie.

Scott Pilgrim Versus the World (2010)

When Scott Pilgrim vs. the World came out, my Facebook news feed was rife with criticism – you know, from those people who are “movie experts” and just share their “humble opinion” on every movie that comes out. I do think that while some bits of criticism had basis, overall, the movie is perfect for a weekend of relaxed viewing. And it’s actually enjoyable, too. I mean, this nerdy dude fights seven evil exes (in over-the-top scenes) to win the heart of this girl. Convince me that’s not fun, and I’ll watch whatever you ask me to.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

If you only choose one movie in this list of underrated movies, choose The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. It’s all about a traveling troupe with this awesome caravan and eccentric characters. As the title suggests, though, there is something more – a whole lot more – behind the scenes that one can imagine. It’s a mix of brilliance, weirdness, and Heath Ledger.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Pan’s Labyrinth is actually an exception to the “underrated movies” label, but we’ve decided to include it only because it’s not that mainstream, and it will add a different flavor to your Independence Day weekend. And with Guillermo del Toro’s new TV series, The Strain airing on July 13, it’s the perfect time to re-acquaint yourself with del Toro’s work.

The Princess Bride (1987)

Okay, I said five underrated movies, and I can count, so this is not a mistake. I also know that many geeks can’t say enough good things about The Princess Bride, but there seems to be this neverending discussion whether it’s really a great movie, or it’s “just another chick flick”. (No offense to chick flicks.)

Obviously, I am one of those who think Inigo Montoya is the best thing since sliced bread, so I’ll shut up now, and you can let us know in the comments what you think about this.

But wait…there’s more: Legally Blonde – One and Two

Just kidding!!! But hey, if this kind of movie is your guilty pleasure, no one’s stopping you! ;)
