Torn Magazine Pages Turned to Art by Vik Muniz

Who said old, seemingly useless things cannot be used for art? Probably no one, but the work of artist Vik Muniz is a sight to behold.

Muniz makes use of magazine pages – the colored kind – to create works of art. While this may not seem revolutionary, the remarkable thing about Muniz’s work is that he takes on popular pieces and recreates them using those magazine pages.

I remember my parents always having a stash of old magazines at home. They always came in handy when project time came around (which seemed all the time back then). We would cut, crumple, snip, and paste magazine pages to suit whatever purpose. However, I would not call those projects works of art, and they certainly will not stand against what Muniz has made.

Take a look at this.

Starry Night

No doubt, even a person with almost zero knowledge in art ((that could very well be yours truly)) will recognize this piece by Van Gogh. Heck, I hate to admit it, but Don McLean’s Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) is playing in my head even as I type these words…

Another work of art which you may recognize is Picking Flowers in a Field, although it may not be as popular as the previous one.

There are several more displayed on Muniz’s web site, but I think this one is my favorite.

The Card Players

You have to look at the pieces closely to see just how much creativity and work went into them. Sure, all credit goes to the masters for conceptualizing the original works of art, but to recreate them using torn up pieces of magazine – isn’t that something else?
