What's Going On With the Nintendo Wii Fit U?

Nintendo may be for old school gamers, but it sure has not totally lost its appeal in more modern times. There are some who say that the Wii was a fluke, but there are those who would adamantly hold to the belief that the Wii made a huge impact on the world of gaming. New consoles or not, there are certain games that can only be attached to Nintendo, Mario Kart being one of them, and I think that’s one of the lasting appeals of this brand. (If you want to know more about Mario Kart 8, we’ve got a great post on what to expect.)

Then there is all that talk about the Wii Fit U, the successor to the popular Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus. I am not totally sure that these games did away with the need to go to a fitness center, but the predecessors of Wii Fit U were certainly received very well.

Wii Fit U was much hyped in 2012, during that year’s E3 conference. Here’s the trailer that was released back then.

It’s mid-2013 now, and where is the Wii Fit U?

Unfortunately, it’s nowhere to be found. If you’re looking for word about the fitness game, there’s some bad news for you – it’s not going to be released till December of this year.

While that may be irritating – no one like waiting, after all – the positive way of looking at it is that Nintendo is making it so much better. Plus, it’s just several months away, and still in time for the holidays.

What do we know about the Wii Fit U now?

Aside from the fact that it will be utilizing both the Balance Board and GamePad, the game will also be bundled with the Fit Meter. The name is simply a play on the game title and the pedometer, which is what it basically is. What’s cool about the Fit Meter is that you can carry it around with you all throughout the day so that it can take data (such as how many steps you’ve taken). When you come home, the data can be wirelessly synced to the Wii U. That does take away the need for all other fitness accessories!

The good news for Wii Fit Plus players is that saved game data is transferrable to the new game. That means you don’t have to start all over again and instead simply continue!

So, the chances are that the Wii Fit U will really be out before the year ends. The question is whether or not it will be such a hit as its predecessors were. Will the enthusiasm over the Wii (U) be enough, or are gamers – even the casual ones – moving on to other things?
