.XXX Domains Get Thumbs Up From ICANN

This is no joke, and the male population of the entire world is probably rejoicing at this turn of events. On Friday last week, ICANN made a controversial decision to allow adult sites to use their own domain suffix – “.xxx”.

ICANN is the non profit organization that deals with the naming system of web sites on the Internet, and the guys there (guys is being used here loosely, alright) have decided to give adult sites a chance. Obviously, this is a very controversial move, and while ICANN has already voted on a decision, we might not see the suffix in use anytime soon as it needs further approval before it can be applied.

The proposal aims to have adult sites using the.com suffix transition to the new suffix. At present, ICANN says that the change is not mandatory at all. Speculation is rife, however, that the change will made mandatory at the end of the day.

It doesn’t seem that they’re going to have problems with this change, though, as as of this writing, ICANN already has 110,000 pre-reservations for the suffix! This is quite impressive as the .xxx suffix is slated to go live more than 6 months from now, if that.

Still, there are adult sites that are apprehensive about the labeling. They feel that this might be the first step in censorship. On the other side of the spectrum, conservatives are against the labeling as it gives a sense of legitimacy to these kinds of web sites.

And you, what do you think about using .xxx to indicate adult sites? Good? Bad? Don’t care?
