Your First Glimpse of Garrett In the New 'Thief'

Reboots are all the rage these days, but as long as they result in quality on Tomb Raider's level, I'm cool with them. Eidos Montreal today has posted online your first look at Thief's protagonist in action, and this sure ain't the Thief you remember. It's something a lot more exciting.

Reboots are all the rage these days, but as long as they result in quality on Tomb Raider‘s level, I’m cool with them. Eidos Montreal today has posted online your first look at Thief‘s protagonist in action, and this sure ain’t the Thief you remember. It’s something a lot more exciting.

Thief is a classic for a reason: it gave birth to the “stealth action” genre. Before that game, first-person shooters were all about running-and-gunning. The idea of doing something other than shooting in a 3D action game was unheard of, but Thief proved that 3D game engines could be used for plenty of genres. It introduced the idea of sneaking around being crucial to the main character’s survival — a point never made more clear than during those rare moments when Garrett had to engage in combat. That was when he always found himself woefully outmatched, and most often meeting a hasty end.

The new Thief holds onto that core value while reinventing the entire premise for modern gamers. Based on the trailer embedded above, it looks like Garrett’s skill set and available gadgets have drastically expanded, allowing the action to unfold in faster and more exciting ways. Granted, this trailer is just a tiny glimpse of what to expect, and it’s pre-rendered animation and not in-game footage. But still, it’s enough of a taste to raise my level of interest.
