Hell’s Paradise is a 2018 Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yuji Kaku (Fantasma, Ayashimon). The manga was licensed by Viz Media for a North American release and had sold well over 2 million copies by 2021.
The series, which consists of 13 different volumes, follows the story of Gabimaru, a ninja sentenced to death on an island called “Hell’s Paradise” for a crime he didn’t commit.
Alongside executioner, Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, Gabimaru must search for the elixir of immortality for the Shogun of Japan and in doing so, earning a pardon for all of the crimes he never committed. The mission won’t be easy though as the island is inhabited by monstrous creatures that have taken the lives of five expedition teams that went on a similar quest before Gabimaru.
The series has drawn comparisons with the work of Junji Ito, who is known for his horror manga.
The series has been adapted into an anime, created by MAPPA (Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen), which was released in April 2023 and is available to watch in the West on Crunchyroll.
