The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a media franchise and shared universe centred around a series of superhero films, produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in publications by Marvel Comics.

The first phase of the MCU kicked off in 2008 with Iron Man and was followed up by The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. It culminated in the release of The Avengers.

Following that, the Infinity Saga consisted of a further two stages, featuring films including Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The Infinity Saga climaxed with a two-part spectacular of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame with Ant-Man and the Wasp separating the two movies.

In 2021, the Fourth phase of the MCU kicked off the Multiverse Saga, starting with Black Widow and including further films featuring Spider-Man, Thor and Black Panther.

A Fifth and Sixth Phase of the MCU has already been confirmed, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania introducing Kang the Conqueror, releasing on February 17, 2023.

Starting in the Fourth Phase, Marvel also introduced a range of canonical TV shows onto Disney Plus, including Loki, Wandavision and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

The MCU is the highest-grossing film franchise of all time, having earned almost $27 billion in box office revenue. Avengers: Endgame is the highest-grossing movie within the universe, earning $2.8 billion alone.
